RADDA - Development of Methods for Analysis of Reactivity

The project aim is to decide system requirements on control rods in order to keep the maximum temperature in the core below 1204 °C for various ATWS scenarios. The focus will be on uncertainty assessment of the codes used, but the project is expected also to lead to development of more realistic acceptance criteria for systems for reactivity control and to give a better understanding of dominating uncertainties.

The project was initiated in early 2005 with Göran Hultqvist (Forsmark NPP) as project manager. It is co-sponsored by NKS, SKI and all power companies as well as by Westinghouse and Studsvik Scandpower. The project aim is to decide system requirements on control rods in order to keep the maximum temperature in the core below 1204 °C for various ATWS scenarios. Calculations are performed by Westinghouse (Polca-T) and Studsvik Scandpower (Simulate). The focus will be on uncertainty assessment of the codes used, but the project is expected also to lead to development of more realistic acceptance criteria for systems for reactivity control and to give a better understanding of dominating uncertainties. The first phases of the project have recently been completed, and results were presented at a seminar on March 2-3 2006. The codes used have reached similar and consistent results. The cases analysed are a number of different postulated failures in shutdown systems. None of the cases have resulted in core temperatures in excess of 600 ºC, and the core was shown still to be sub-critical in cases with failures in 8-10 adjacent control rods.
